The Bureau of Labor Standards reports that one out of eight workers who die on the job have recently consumed illicit narcotics or alcohol. 26% of those incidents were managers. Alcohol and cocaine were the most commonly detected substances.

  • The cost to replace an hourly drug abuser could exceed $7000.00. That mid-level manager could cost you over $10,000.00. And if you are lucky, the cost of replacing a senior executive begins at $40,000.00.
  • 25% of the substance-abusing employee's wages are lost due to poor attendance, inefficiency, and an increased use of health insurance.
  • 4 out of 10 industrial fatalities. 65% of violence and thefts. 50% of all employee emergency room visits are directly attributed to drug abusing employees.
  • Drug abusing employees file 5 times more workers' compensation claims. 2.5 times more likely to have absences longer than 8 days. and 3.6 times more likely to be injured on the job.
  • 65% of all work-related accidents are the direct result of substance abuse.
  • Drug abusing employees have health care expenditures for their families that are twice that on non-abusing employees.
  • 67% of people entering the workplace have used drugs, 44% have used them in the past year.
  • A drug-abusing employee is more likely to be violent to himself and to others. Let alone the negative influence and pressures that the abuser will have on co-workers.
  • 70% of all drug users are employed. 35% of all drug users sell drugs to co-workers to support their own drug habit.
  • America is 5% of the world's population yet consumes 65% of the world's illegal drugs.
  • 7.5% of full-time employees reported being heavy drinkers.
  • Courts are increasingly holding employers responsible for their employee's actions involving drugs and alcohol.
